To Inspire, Educate and Entertain
During this profoundly uncertain period, we share links to: 1) an insightful discussion about public health, 2) a streaming video about gene-editing and 3) music by Sting, Jimmy Fallon and others - and a distributed performance of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy".
Stay well!
TO INSPIRE US: About Public Service and Health
Last week Dr. Mitchell Katz provided an insightful discussion on battling COVID-19, AIDS, his passion for public service and more.
Katz is CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals, the largest municipal health system in the US - and previously held leading public health roles in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
His inspiring interview, from KQED (29 minutes), is here.
TO EDUCATE US: About Reshaping the BioSphere
On Feb. 9 2020, our weekly note discussed “Human Nature: The Story of CRISPR - The Most Important Scientific Discovery of the 21st Century”, a documentary about gene editing.
CRISPR is an approach that “given us unprecedented control over the basic building blocks of life. It opens the door to curing diseases, reshaping the biosphere, and designing our own children.”
These capabilities will 1) impact all life sciences (agriculture, farming, etc.), 2) drive significant innovation and 3) trigger many social, legal and ethical debates.
Adapting to the current environment, the film’s distribution shifted to on-line streaming and purchase.
To learn more about CRISPR, in a non-technical way, the film is on iTunes, Amazon, Vimeo or Google Play.
TO ENTERTAIN US: While "Sheltering-in-Place"
Sting, Jimmy Fallon and The Roots performed a social distancing remix of The Police's "Don't Stand So Close to Me" with instruments found at home while "sheltering-in-place".

The Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest focused on “adjusting to a new reality” with its distributed, collaborative performance of Beethoven's ‘Ode to Joy’.
