Amid global uncertainty, this week we recommend two books to inspire, a film about mushrooms to enlighten and milk-focused parody based on “We Will Rock You” to entertain.

Stay safe and health.

TWO BOOKS TO INSPIRE  - both published this year.

"Until the End of Time: Mind, Matter, and Our Search for Meaning in an Evolving Universe" by Brian Green

  • The author is a physicist and mathematician at Columbia University.

  • The New York Times said “This book is a love letter to the ephemeral cosmic moment when everything is possible. Reading it is like riding an escalator up through a giant department store. On the lower floors you find things like time, energy, gravity and the Big Bang, and biology  … Upward we go through the emporium of ideas to floors dedicated to consciousness, free will, language and religion."

"Successful Aging: A Neuroscientist Explores the Power and Potential of Our Lives" by Daniel J Levitin

  • An engaging read/listen, focusing on living longer and better

  • Nature said Levitin “delves into the multiple-trace theory of memory, the ageing microbiomefats and the brain, the impacts of neural implants, and the joys of non-retirement.”

  • In the author’s prior career in the music industry (producer, sound engineer, etc.), he worked with Blue Öyster CultChris IsaakJoni Mitchell, Joe Satriani, Steely DanStevie WonderSantana, The Grateful Dead and others.

ON MUSHROOMS AND THEIR MAGIC

"Fabulous Fungi: The Magic Beneath Us", directed by Louie Schwartzberg, starring Paul StametsMichael Pollan and others

  • In response to the Coronavirus, the film will be available to rent or buy as a digital download on March 26.

  • Wall Street Journal:“Gorgeous photography! Time-lapse sequences of mushrooms blossoming forth could pass for studies of exotic flowers growing on another planet.”

  • Norman Lear:“Fantastic Fungi is a great film that captures our love affair with the planet we share.”

  • NY Times: “Mushrooms, it turns out, are just the visible part of an awesome organism known as mycelium, most of which lies below ground. Neither animal nor vegetable, this vast network of cells has been sharing nutrients and forming connections for billions of years, breaking down decaying matter and transforming it into living soil … A charming blend of science and conjecture, “Fantastic Fungi” wants to free your mind."

  • More details about the digital release of the movie here.

ON MILK - AND QUEEN

We Will Milk Cows is a parody of Queen’s “We Will Rock You” posted about a week ago.

  • This fun 2:37 minute video is by Peterson Farm Brothers of Assaria, Kansas.

  • Peterson Farm Brothers is a 5th generation family business that, in addition to raising beef and feed stock, produces content to address misconceptions about agriculture.
